History of the prize
Established in 1997 as the Biomedical Image Awards, which in 2006 became the Wellcome Image Awards, the ever-evolving competition relaunched as the Wellcome Photography Prize in 2018.
It now rewards pictures that show the importance of health in society and the impact health issues have on people and communities worldwide.
Previous winners
The overall winner of the Wellcome Photography Prize 2019, and winner of the Social Perspectives category, was 'I Feel Relaxed When I Play with String'. The tender photograph, taken by Erin Lefevre of her brother Liam, is a powerful insight into living with autism.
Other 2019 category winners explored a hidden story about disability, sex and wellbeing, the role robots could play in helping to care for an ageing population and what researchers are doing to identify emerging zoonotic diseases before they become a pandemic threat.
