Julie Dorrington Award 2016

The Julie Dorrington Award honours both Julie’s contribution to Wellcome, and the service the clinical photography profession provides to medicine and medical education.

Julie joined Wellcome in 1993. She brought with her the Graves Medical Audiovisual Library’s National Medical Slide Bank of 12,000 clinical images from her previous role. During her 12 years at Wellcome, she and her team tripled the number of clinical images we hold. The images were digitised to make them available online for use in teaching, medical education and research. This created one of the most comprehensive collections of clinical images in the world.

Before joining Wellcome, Julie had spent 30 years as a clinical photographer at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, as well as teaching at the London School of Medical Photography for 16 years. She was also a founder associate member and lifelong participant of the Institute of Medical Illustrators, the professional body representing clinical photographers, healthcare designers, medical artists and clinical video producers.

MIT collaboration

From 2011 to 2017, Wellcome partnered with the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Each organisation contributed an image to the other’s awards and provided a judge for the other’s panel.
