Wellcome Early-Career Awards

This scheme provides funding for early-career researchers from any discipline who are ready to develop their research identity. Through innovative projects, they will deliver shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing. By the end of the award, they will be ready to lead their own independent research programme. 

Where your host organisation is based:

Duration of funding:

Usually 5 years, but may be less for some disciplines, and longer if held on a part-time basis

Scale of funding:

Salary and up to £400,000 for research expenses 

International Master’s Fellowships

Offering nationals of low- and middle-income countries the opportunity to receive training at Master’s degree level.

Type of researcher:

  • Basic
  • Clinical
  • Public health

Duration of funding:

30 months (12 months taught Master’s course and 18 months research project)

Scale of funding:

£120,000 including salary, studentship stipend, fees and research expenses

Wellcome Career Development Awards

This scheme provides funding for mid-career researchers from any discipline who have the potential to be international research leaders. They will develop their research capabilities, drive innovative programmes of work and deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.

Wellcome Discovery Awards

This scheme provides funding for established researchers and teams from any discipline who want to pursue bold and creative research ideas to deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.

Usually 8 years, but may be less for some disciplines, and longer if held on a part-time basis.

Scale of funding:

Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowships

Offering recently qualified postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to start independent research careers, working in some of the best research environments in the world.

  • Republic of Ireland

Duration of funding:

4 years

Scale of funding:

£300,000, including salary, fellowship supplement and research expenses

Sir Henry Dale Fellowships

Providing support for postdoctoral researchers who aim to become independent scientists leading their own groups. The scheme is a partnership between the Royal Society and the Wellcome Trust.

Usually up to around £1.2 million, including salary and research expenses

Senior Research Fellowships

Collaborative Awards in Science

Funding teams of researchers, consisting of independent research groups, to work together on the most important scientific problems that can only be solved through collaborative efforts.

Innovator Awards

Supporting researchers who are transforming great ideas into healthcare innovations that could have a significant impact on human health.

Duration of funding:

Usually up to 24 months, or up to 36 months for multidisciplinary collaborations

Scale of funding:

Up to £500,000, or up to £750,000 for multidisciplinary collaborations

PhD Training Fellowships for Clinicians

Offering clinicians the opportunity to undertake a PhD within a structured and mentored training environment.
