Covid-19: understanding the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants

This scheme provides funding for multidisciplinary teams to help improve our understanding of the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants. By the end of the award, successful applicants will have produced research to support national policy makers in preventing and controlling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Where your host organisation is based:

Duration of funding:

Up to 3 years. Level and duration of funding will vary depending on proposed research and associated activity.

Scale of funding:

Up to £3 million for research expenses, including salaries where required.

Mental Health Award: looking backwards, moving forward – understanding how interventions for anxiety, depression, and psychosis work

Wellcome will fund teams of researchers investigating causal mechanisms underpinning effective interventions for anxiety, depression, and/or psychosis.

Duration of funding:

Up to 8 years but can be much shorter

Scale of funding:

Up to £5 million

Wellcome Mental Health Data Prize

The Wellcome Data Prize in Mental Health is an opportunity for collaborative approaches for research into anxiety and depression in young people. The Prize supports multi-disciplinary teams to produce a digital tool to enable future research. 

Duration of funding:

6-18 months

Scale of funding:

There are three phases to the prize, each six months long and with different levels of funding and support on offer:

  • Discovery phase: 10 teams will be selected to receive £40,000 of funding 
  • Prototyping phase: 5 teams will be selected to receive £100,000 of funding 
  • Sustainability phase: £500,000 will be allocated across 3 winning teams

Mental Health Award: improving cognitive and functional outcomes in people experiencing, or at risk of, psychosis

This call supports interventions to improve cognitive and functional outcomes for people experiencing, or at risk of, psychosis – or to test new or existing markers of cognitive impairment for prediction of risk or treatment stratification.

Where your host organisation is based:

  • Anywhere in the world (apart from mainland China)

Duration of funding:

Up to 5 years for intervention development and evaluation. Up to 3 years for studies testing markers of cognitive functioning.

Scale of funding:

Up to £3 million for applications developing interventions. Up to £1 million for studies testing markers of cognitive functioning.

Wellcome Career Development Awards

This scheme provides funding for mid-career researchers from any discipline who have the potential to be international research leaders. They will develop their research capabilities, drive innovative programmes of work and deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.

Where your host organisation is based:

Duration of funding:

Usually 8 years, but may be less for some disciplines and may only be longer if held on a part-time basis.

Scale of funding:

Digital Technology Development Awards (Climate-Sensitive Infectious Disease Modelling)

This scheme provides funding for software developers from any career stage and discipline to develop digital tools that will improve climate sensitive infectious disease modelling. By the end of the award, successful applicants will have delivered a piece of open-source digital technology that will increase the impact of research in addressing this threat to health.

Where your host organisation is based:

  • Anywhere in the world (apart from mainland China)

Duration of funding:

Up to 5 years. We expect development of the tool to take place in the early part of the award. Later years will be used for maintenance of the software.

Scale of funding:

Up to £500,000 for research expenses, including salaries

PhD Fellowships for Health Professionals

Wellcome’s PhD Programmes for Health Professionals offer health professionals outstanding research training in supportive and inclusive research environments.

  • Clinical

  • UK

Duration of funding:

3 years (full-time equivalent)

Wellcome Discovery Awards

This scheme provides funding for established researchers and teams from any discipline who want to pursue bold and creative research ideas to deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.

Duration of funding:

Usually 8 years, but may be less for some disciplines, and may only be longer if held on a part-time basis.

Scale of funding:

You should ask for the resources you need for your research programme – see the 'What we offer' section on this page. You will need to justify this in your application. 

Wellcome Early-Career Awards

This scheme provides funding for early-career researchers from any discipline who are ready to develop their research identity. Through innovative projects, they will deliver shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing. By the end of the award, they will be ready to lead their own independent research programme. 

Where your host organisation is based:

Duration of funding:

Usually 5 years, but may be less for some disciplines, and may only be longer if held on a part-time basis.

Scale of funding:

Your salary and up to £400,000 for research expenses. If eligible, you may also request additional funding for overseas allowances and overheads.
