Funding portfolio: funded people and projects

Find out about the people and projects we’ve funded and get the latest data on all our grant funding.

We fund transformative research by early-career, mid-career and established researchers from the beginnings of ideas at the discovery stage through to enabling projects to have an impact out in the world. The work we support crosses many fields and disciplines, such as physical and social sciences, clinical research, arts and humanities. We have committed to spend £16bn on research in the decade to 2032.

Grants we’ve awarded

The research we’ll support in the future isn’t limited by what we’ve supported in the past – we're open to new ideas and perspectives. You can find out what we're currently looking for on our funding opportunity page.

Major partnerships and directed funding

Through our directed funding we work with others to address significant, complex problems that require a long-term approach, for example, how to help build research capacity in Africa and Asia – two areas facing some of the world’s greatest health challenges.

Usually, we directly approach other organisations with an offer, setting up programmes, partnerships, institutions or separate organisations where that would be the most effective mechanism.

Major initiatives and directed activity

Tackling some of the biggest challenges in research requires a long-term perspective and a sizeable focus. We call this area of work our directed funding. Learn more about the initiatives we support with this programme of work.

Wellcome Leap

Wellcome Leap is a not-for-profit organisation set up by Wellcome to accelerate discovery and innovation for the benefit of human health.

The Wellcome Sanger Institute

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a UK-based genomic research centre funded by Wellcome to improve human health and understand life on earth.

Our programmes in Africa and Asia

Africa and Asia are at the sharp end of some of the biggest global health and development challenges and need funding and world-class teams to tackle this. We’re working to support researchers in Africa and Asia to build research ecosystems, develop the next generation of researchers and improve health for billions of people.
