Wellcome responds to UN Environment Programme Overshoot Report
The UN Environment Programme Overshoot Report (published 2 September) warns that global temperature rise is set to cross 1.5°C, likely within the next few years, pushing climate risks and impacts to increasingly dangerous heights, but that it is still possible to bring temperatures down and achieve global goals in the Paris Agreement.

Dr Alan Dangour, Director of Climate & Health at Wellcome, said:
"Breaching 1.5°C is not just a symbolic milestone. Every fraction of a degree of warming puts more lives at risk through more extreme weather, deadly heat, and air pollution. The devastating impacts are already being felt by communities across Europe and around the world - as we've witnessed this summer.”
“Cutting CO₂ emissions remains vital. But reducing the emissions of super pollutants is now the fastest way to slow warming. A strong agreement on tackling super pollutants at COP31 could provide the emergency brake we urgently need - helping put 1.5°C back within reach while protecting health and saving lives immediately.”
