Wellcome responds to new global childhood immunisation estimates
The World Health Organization and UNICEF have released their Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC) - the world's largest and most comprehensive dataset on childhood immunisation coverage trends for 13 vaccine-preventable diseases across 195 countries.

Debbie King, Research Lead in Vaccines at Wellcome, said: “In too many countries we are seeing the impact of political instability, conflict and funding cuts on childhood immunisation rates. These are the children who are most at risk, who are not receiving potentially life-saving vaccines.
"Progress is possible. In 2025 Gavi-eligible countries vaccinated more children than ever and over 60% of countries maintained high coverage or are progressing. Yet globally we remain off track to meet the 2030 targets of halving the number of unvaccinated children compared to 2019 and eliminating the transmission of dangerous but preventable diseases like measles.
"As a global health community, we need to do more to ensure vaccines are affordable, accessible and acceptable for all those at risk. We need to understand disease burden, accelerate the development of effective vaccines, counter misinformation, and maintain sustained financing for immunisation programmes.”
