Jonathan Underwood, Major International Programmes Lead
Jonathan Underwood joined the Major International Programmes team at Wellcome in 2020. In May 2023 he became Lead, and deputy to the Head, of Major International Programmes.

Jonathan leads on engagement with and support for a portfolio of Wellcome’s major partnerships in low-resource settings, globally. This includes Wellcome’s five Africa and Asia Programmes, whose primary locations are in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam, and two catalytic institutions through which Wellcome co-funds the funders: the Science for Africa Foundation and the India Alliance.
His background includes developing and implementing international research and teaching programmes, including over fifteen years for the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he led the operational delivery of the International Growth Centre.
Jonathan holds masters degrees in literature, philosophy and public policy.
