This advisory group covers applications that aim to understand the causes and consequences of health, wellbeing and disease in populations. It consists of two sub-groups. One sub-group will focus primarily on the assessment of applications centred on epidemiological and data-driven approaches, and one sub-group will focus primarily on the assessment of applications looking at social and behavioural factors and at health systems and governance.

Research can employ any suitable study design and methods, including qualitative and/or quantitative methods and cross-sectional and longitudinal data collection and analysis.

Examples include:

  • primary or secondary data collection and analysis to enable epidemiological insights into the causes, consequences and mechanisms of health and disease
  • social epidemiology, health inequalities and inequities, including structural and socioeconomic drivers within systems and services
  • disease modelling and surveillance that generates new discovery insights into the distribution, burden and determinants of disease
  • clinical and interventional studies with a clear discovery or methodological focus
  • studies of health systems, including their organisation, performance, and governance, and studies of healthcare access and equity
  • behavioural science and health psychology focused on improving understanding of health and disease or where research contributes to generating new insights into system design, policy, or service delivery
  • methodological and tool development in population health including data linkage, statistical methods and conceptual frameworks that enable further discovery research

Proposed projects may span more than one funding area. You should choose the research subject area which aligns with the focus of the project.

Applications to the Population and Public Health research subject area will be allocated during Wellcome processing to one of the two sub-groups. This allocation is based on the application's focus and the composition and capacity of the sub-groups.
