Project summary
This project develops EMPHASIS—a novel hybrid imaging platform that combines quantum technology control techniques with electron microscopy to transform how biological samples are visualised at the nanoscale. Using a novel quantum platform rather than mechanical stages, EMPHASIS enables six-dimensional control over proteins, viruses, and nanomaterials, reducing imaging times from hours to minutes while enhancing spatial resolution and long-term stability. By integrating the new platform directly into the microscope environment, EMPHASIS unlocks real-time, in situ control and spectroscopic readout, paving the way for richer structural and functional characterisation of individual biomolecules. This fusion of quantum technologies with biomedical imaging opens a new frontier for studying complex biological systems with unprecedented clarity and speed. The research builds on foundational work in quantum control and aims to deliver a step-change in the tools available to molecular biology, structural medicine, and pharmaceutical science. EMPHASIS will ultimately empower researchers with a faster, more precise method for probing disease mechanisms, tracking therapeutic interactions, and accelerating drug discovery at the single-particle level.
