Project summary
Deep learning (DL) has revolutionized life science image analysis, but most biomedical laboratories lack the resources and expertise to leverage these powerful tools. In 2021, we released ZeroCostDL4Mic, an online platform that enables researchers to easily create and execute DL workflows without coding. However, reliance on Google Colab and Google Drive limits flexibility.
We propose extending ZeroCostDL4Mic into a new platform called DL4MicEverywhere. This platform will provide the same accessible experience but enable the use of local computing resources through docker containers. DL4MicEverywhere will integrate with the bioimage visualization and annotation tool Napari, improving usability. We will also focus on providing training and access to underserved communities.
The main objectives are to develop the backend infrastructure, integrate DL4MicEverywhere into Napari, and provide training and support for researchers and underserved communities. This project aims to democratize DL in microscopy by removing barriers and expanding the collection of networks with new DL-driven approaches. The open-source platform aligns with CZI, Wellcome and Kavli Foundation's mission to support open science and reproducibility.
The project will be co-led by a multinational team of developers and biologists, benefiting from a strong existing user community and partnerships in South Africa and African Portuguese-speaking countries.
