Beth Thompson, Executive Director, Policy & Partnerships at Wellcome, said:

“We're pleased to see the Chancellor recognise the strategic importance of life sciences for economic growth. We welcome commitments on the Oxford-Cambridge corridor and Lord Vallance’s role as champion to develop and maintain it as a hub of scientific excellence.

“To fully unlock the whole country's potential for economic growth, we must support the entirety of the UK research sector. For example, through visa schemes that draw on the global talent pool, ensuring the UK is an attractive place to do science, and through providing strategic and ambitious support that puts the UK university sector on a sustainable footing. In doing so, the UK can maintain its position as a world leader in scientific research, benefiting our economy here and health around the world.”
