The prize, launching in May 2026, will celebrate and champion research groups developing new interventions for depression, anxiety and psychosis. The overall winner will receive USD 1 million, with three finalists awarded USD 250,000 each.

Beyond financial backing, the prize will provide visibility, connections and practical support to help winning interventions progress towards adoption and policy integration.

By highlighting new interventions that demonstrate meaningful improvements in outcomes, the prize aims to shift the public narrative on mental health to one of opportunity, and to catalyse greater investment in mental health from foundations, governments and other key stakeholders.

Millions of people worldwide are held back by mental health challenges. A new generation of tools, approaches and methodologies is emerging, with the potential to transform people’s lives. Wellcome seeks to accelerate their development, globally.

Following an open tender process, Wellcome has selected Nature as its strategic partner. The Nature Awards team will help to design and deliver a globally visible, inclusive and credible prize that achieves these goals.

The prize will open in May 2026 with a launch event in London, UK.
