How to transfer funds between budget headings
Costs you can move between budget headings and when you need to contact us.
What you can transfer
Minor transfers between budget headings don’t need our approval.
However, you must contact us about transferring funds from or into the following budget headings:
- Fellow's salary
- student stipend
- grantholder's salary for Early Career Awards or Career Development Awards
Also contact us if:
- there are significant changes to research staffing levels
- there are major changes in animal use and equipment purchases
- you or staff employed on the grant spend less time working overseas than expected and overseas allowances are no longer needed
- there is a need to spend funding for overheads or research management to support other activities
- there is a need to spend funding for public engagement on other activities.
Check your award letter to find out if some budget headings can't be used for other activities. These include:
- funds provided for the grantholder's salary
- overseas allowances
- International Recruitment Supplement
- overheads
- grants awarded in partnership with other funders.
Read about the type of costs you can claim on the grant.
We may not pay for costs that we haven’t approved and which are significantly different from those in your original award.
Supplements to existing grant budgets
We do not provide supplementary funding except in specific circumstances.
