This is a self-portrait taken by UK-based photographer Georgie Wileman. It documents the dates of Wileman’s scars from endometriosis surgeries. Endometriosis affects one in ten women and those assigned female at birth and is often referred to as “painful periods”, a phrase that downplays the severity of a condition that causes internal bleeding and lesions that can damage internal organs. Wileman says, “Endometriosis is dangerously underfunded, under-researched and misunderstood, leaving so many isolated in their agony and fighting to be heard.” Wileman’s photograph very directly shows us the reality of living with endometriosis.

Open to everyone, everywhere. Submit your work by 21 October 2026 for the chance to win up to £10,000. The biennial prize brings together photography and scientific imaging to showcase work from different cultures, communities and disciplines.

We're looking for compelling images that explore urgent health challenges and scientific discovery – from mental health, infectious disease and climate change to the fundamental research that expands our understanding of life, health and wellbeing. We welcome work that sparks curiosity, offers fresh perspectives and starts important conversations.
