

Stephen Gray, Ecosystems Lead, South and Southeast Asia
Stephen is the Research Ecosystems Lead for South and Southeast Asia, part of the wider Research Ecosystems team. He manages Wellcome’s major programmes and partnerships based in these geographies.

Stephen’s team is responsible for overseeing these programmes from an assurance and engagement perspective. His team ensures that the programmes are operationally fit and that the research supported and conducted by them aligns with Wellcome’s mission. Stephen’s role additionally involves broader strategy development to enhance Wellcome’s presence and connection to the region and leverage to maximise research impact for the ecosystem.
Prior to his current role, Stephen was a research manager within Wellcome’s Discovery Research team, leading on major UK programmes such as the UK Biobank.
Before joining Wellcome, Stephen was an academic research scientist at Kings College London in the field of cardio-metabolomics. He has also worked at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in the field of therapeutics and diabetic complications. He holds a PhD in developmental biology and has university training in human diseases and pathology.
