

Shomari Lewis-Wilson, Ecosystems Lead, UK
Shomari leads the Equitable Research Ecosystems team for the UK. This team oversees significant investments, partnerships and initiatives across the UK research ecosystem. Their goal is to broaden the range of people leading, participating in and benefiting from science.

Shomari joined Wellcome in 2018 as part of the Research Funding team and facilitated the delivery of several multimillion-pound funding programmes. As an inaugural member of Wellcome’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Executive Committee, he implemented changes to promote equity internally within Wellcome's culture.
His notable achievements include supporting Wellcome's first policy for grant holders with disabilities, its first EDI policy, delivering the Institutional Fund for Research Culture, and introducing the Accelerator Awards, Wellcome’s first targeted funding stream for researchers from Black, Bangladeshi or Pakistani heritage backgrounds.
Shomari is a founding member and former Chair of the Wellcome Race Equity Network (WREN), organising thought-provoking events and campaigns on Afrofuturism, antiracism, and Black Joy. He co-founded the New Fables Collective to highlight racialised thought leadership. He has a master’s in Clinical Neuroscience from the Queen Square Institute of Neurology at UCL.
Rooted in his British Caribbean upbringing, Shomari values love, hard work and community. In his personal life, he enjoys video gaming, science fiction and running half and full marathons.
