Steven joins Wellcome on secondment from York University in Toronto, Canada, where he is the Dahdaleh Distinguished Chair in Global Governance & Legal Epidemiology and a Professor of Global Health, Law, and Political Science. In this role, he built and led the Global Strategy Lab – one of Canada’s largest social science research institutes – which is a WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance.
Steven previously served as the Vice-President for Data, Surveillance & Foresight at the Public Health Agency of Canada and as Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Population & Public Health. He also previously worked at a leading international intellectual property law firm in Toronto, the World Health Organization in Geneva, and the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General in New York City.
Steven is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading global health law scholars and has been deeply involved in negotiating the WHO Pandemic Agreement. He is an elected Fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada.
