Martin Smith, head of policy at Wellcome, said: “This is a very encouraging sign and something we and others have been calling for to unlock investment. To bring growth to the economy, we need to lean into the UK’s strengths in science and technology. The demand for laboratory space currently far outpaces supply and cumbersome planning processes that are stacked against success have been a large part of what’s behind this.

“By aligning planning regulations with the needs of the research sector, we can achieve growth, maintain global competitiveness and make progress on discoveries to improve health. I hope we continue to see such a focus on science for economic growth across government.”
