Wellcome responds to progress on antimicrobial resistance
Wellcome comments on the progress made in the fight against antimicrobial resistance at the 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR, and the need to ensure and equitable, effective global approach.
This week policy-makers from around the world gathered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to discuss topics ranging from strengthening global governance and sustainable financing to setting up an independent evidence panel and access to affordable antimicrobials.
Wellcome's Head of Policy, Infectious Disease, Jeremy Knox, who was attending the conference, said:
“The fight against AMR is picking up steam, and we must not lose this momentum. The 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR in Jeddah this week has been another encouraging stage for action. Now is the time for ensuring that the voices of those most affected are at the heart of the AMR response. It is promising to see the global south taking a leading role in these key events, with Nigeria being chosen to host the next ministerial conference. This is a welcome step towards a more equitable dialogue on the response to the AMR crisis, but progress is fragile – we must see concrete steps over the coming year to address this global issue, including the mobilisation of an international scientific evidence panel.”
