Commenting on Sir Ed Davey's speech today, Martin Smith, Head of Policy Lab at Wellcome, said:
"Making it easier for the UK to attract the best of global science talent is something we have consistently been calling for. UK science has been hindered by a visa regime for researchers that is many times more expensive than those in France or Germany, damaging our competitiveness as a destination for investment, and hindering the ability of British labs to make breakthroughs that can transform the future of human health.
"To make a real difference it's important that any change is not just limited to the handful of highest-profile scientists, but is extended to the researchers and technicians at a wider range of levels who between them make new discoveries and create new businesses."
