Project summary
Southern Mozambique?s ultimate goal is to achieve zero local malaria cases in the next few years. Progress towards this goal has been slow despite interventions such as bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Changes in mosquito behavior, human activities, and resistance to the chemicals used to kill the mosquitoes make elimination efforts difficult. I found multiple Anopheles species in southern Mozambique but their role in malaria transmission is unknown. Human activities can affect these interventions and may increase the risk of communities to malaria. This project will measure the magnitude of ongoing malaria transmission and identify the key factors associated with the persistence so that future interventions can be better aligned to achieve maximum impact. These will help us to stop or reduce malaria transmission by using the best possible malaria interventions locally and across Africa.
