Project summary

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC) has monitored influenza in the community for over 50 years (www.rcgp.org.uk/rsc) by routinely recording attendances at spotter practices scattered throughout England. Since the 1990s a subset of practices have taken swabs for influenza testing by Public Health England. More recently, this system has been used to provide information about how well national flu vaccines are performing. This rich, diverse and geographically representative information provides a simple weekly index used to track epidemics and other infectious conditions and provides unique longitudinal insights into primary health care in England. Data availability is limited by the necessity for manual searching of the various different collection formats which have changed over time. Our application seeks to organise the massive information archive in easily accessible and automated searchable formats and link it to other appropriate data sources such as death and hospitalisation data.
