Project summary

Countries in SSA still don't know how many children are born or how many people die each year, creating challenges in planning. Good health policy needs reliable descriptions of denominators. This is the justification for this study to produce localized evidence to understand better the challenges that cause problems for CRVS systems. Existing surveillance sites in Kenya will be used to answer four questions:

a) Where are the gaps in the current civil registration processes?

b) What is the true proportion of unregistered births and deaths in Kenya?

c) Do individuals have the same chance of being registered by the CRVS system when they are born or when they die?

d) What explains why some events don't get registered when they occur.

These four questions will be used to inform the design of an intervention package and demonstrate how we can get to universal CRVS coverage in Kenya.
