Project summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, especially those that demonstrate machine learning (ML), will increasingly be deployed in healthcare to aid diagnostics and treatment recommendations. These systems will challenge existing embedded values and ethical requirements in the industry, such as the standard of care that clinicians need to employ, how the ideal of equal access to healthcare is to be implemented, and disagreement about how practitioners will need to trade off risks.

I will examine each of these three issues to understand how the ethics of healthcare might need to be re-imagined where AI and ML systems are used, while at the same time ensuring that the benefits of such systems can be harnessed.
