Project summary

In the last six years, there has been growing interest in the field of medical and health humanities (MHH) in Africa. Conferences and workshops held in southern Africa have revealed numerous inter-, trans- and multidisciplinary projects that are MHH in nature, if not yet name. Health crises in the region precipitated by climate crises, increasing global inequalities, migration and war, continually bring together health practitioners, artists, activists, academics and civil society to address health concerns.

Focusing initially on southern and east Africa, we will draw on this work to invigorate the already existing MHH Africa network, and to create a southern and east African MHH (SEAMHH) working group that brings together people interested in MHH in these two regions to shape, define and plan how to develop the field locally, regionally and across regions.
