Approaches for Creating Clinical Evidence of treatment effects in routine Populations excluded from Trials (ACCEPT)

Clinical trials generate the strongest evidence for a medicine’s efficacy. However, many people with a condition will be excluded from studies. When treating people in normal practice, we assume that the benefits and harms of medicines are the same in everyone, but this may not be the case.

I want to find out whether it is safe to apply evidence from clinical trials to all patients. I will analyse large healthcare databases and measure the benefits and harms of commonly used treatments for a range of conditions. I will use new approaches to analyse health data to provide evidence on the effects of medicines in people seen in the NHS. 

This work can be used to support decisions made by people writing clinical guidelines and by medicines regulators.
