Fiona Powrie joins our Board of Governors
Fiona Powrie, Director of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at the University of Oxford, is joining Wellcome as a new Governor.
She comes to Wellcome having gained extensive experience across the research environment – she has chaired the European Research Council Advanced Grants panel, is a member of the Royal Society Premier Awards Committee and co-chairs Wellcome’s Science Interview Panel.
Fiona’s pioneering research in immunology has provided crucial insights into the causes of chronic intestinal inflammation and possible treatments. She was the Sidney Truelove Professor of Gastroenterology and Head of the Translational Gastroenterology Unit at Oxford from 2009-14.
Her particular interest is translating basic research into clinical applications.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Fiona says she’s thrilled to join Wellcome: "It’s an organisation I’ve admired since I started my research career. Through funding great scientific ideas, Wellcome is committed to promoting health around the world. It will be an honour to help deliver this goal."
Eliza Manningham-Buller, Wellcome’s Chair, says: "We are delighted that Fiona has agreed to serve as a Governor of the Trust. She will bring to our Board not only her excellence in science but a broad perspective of what Wellcome can achieve."
Fiona will formally join Wellcome’s Board of Governors in January 2018.
