Project summary

This study investigates the health impacts of heatwaves on the elderly in Argentina's five most populous cities: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, and San Miguel de Tucumán. Utilizing a mixed-methods design, the project combines statistical analysis to characterize heatwaves and their correlation with elderly mortality, with a qualitative study exploring risk perceptions, communication, and protective factors at institutional and community levels. The initial phase employs Generalized Additive Models for time series analysis to evaluate the effects of heatwaves on mortality, stratified by age, gender, cause of death, and geographical area. Additionally, a geospatial heat assessment will be integrated to identify areas of high risk and social vulnerability to extreme heat events. The qualitative phase aims to deepen understanding of climate risk management challenges and opportunities through surveys, focus groups with health professionals, caregivers, and policymaker consultations. This project seeks to develop a comprehensive communication policy toolkit alongside public policy guidelines for managing and preparing for extreme heat, informed by global best practices. It intends to strengthen local capacities by working with local governments and communities and disseminating lessons learned to subnational governments across Latin America, offering valuable insights into replicable protective strategies in other urban settings.
